When Your Caring Role Ends

At Carers Leeds, we recognise that caring for someone can often be a significant part of your life and when your caring role ends or changes, you may find yourself experiencing a range of different emotions. You might also find that there are a number of practical and financial things to think about. Guiding you through these changes is important to us.

Looking after you

The feelings you experience after your caring role ends or changes, can be complex and conflicting. Whatever your circumstances, you might find that the sudden change leaves you feeling mixed emotions.

You don’t have to navigate this time alone. Please call our Advice Line on 0113 380 4300 to speak with one of our Carer Support Workers.

Life after Caring

Carers UK have put together some suggestions that may be helpful if and when the time feels right.

Check you are claiming the right benefits

When your caring role ends or changes, it’s important to tell the Department of Work & Pensions (DWP) of your change in circumstances as soon as you are able. This is particularly important if you are claiming benefits related to your caring role.

The next step is to check that you are claiming the right state benefits.

  • If you would like to find out what state benefits you may be entitled to, please visit Turn2Us.
  • For information on the different eligibility requirements for state benefits visit GOV.UK.
  • For an up-to-date benefits check, contact Leeds City Council’s Welfare Rights Unit on 0113 376 0452.
