Taking Care of Yourself

If you have caring responsibilities you know what it’s like to put yourself last. Carers can too easily become physically and emotionally exhausted and burnt out, so it’s really important to look after your own needs.

If the idea of looking after yourself feels overwhelming or unrealistic, you’re not alone. We can also help you consider your options and help you find a way forward.

Join our Walk and Talk groups for gentle exercise, fresh air, and the chance to chat with fellow carers. Our carers groups offer time to unwind over a cuppa. We also help you find ways to take a proper break when you need it most.

Let your GP know you are a carer

Your GP surgery can refer you to Carers Leeds by completing a Yellow Card.

All GP practices in Leeds should have a supply of these. If you complete a Yellow Card with a member of staff at your surgery they will post it back to Carers Leeds and we will then contact you by telephone or email.

The surgery should also make a note on your patient record to indicate that you are a carer. As a result, the surgery may be willing to offer you appointment times and services that fit around your caring responsibilities.

They can also make sure you get invited for health checks, flu vaccinations and any carer-related events at the practice.
