Every day in Leeds, thousands of people care for someone — a parent, partner, child, neighbour, or friend — who couldn’t manage without their help. Often, they don’t even see themselves as a “carer,” just someone doing what needs to be done.

And that’s the tricky part — because when people don’t realise, they’re carers, they often miss out on the support, advice, and breathing space that could make life a little easier.

That’s what Carers Rights Day is all about — raising awareness of carers’ rights and making sure everyone knows where to turn for help. It’s a national reminder that no one should have to care alone.

At Carers Leeds, we stand with carers every single day of the year. One of the simple but powerful ways we’re doing that is by growing a team of friendly people who help carers feel seen, supported, and valued in their communities. And this is where you can get involved.

A small action that makes a big difference

It might not seem like much but leaving a leaflet or poster where people wait, gather, work or talk in your local neighbourhood or community can change someone’s life.

That one leaflet or poster might help someone realise:

  • “Oh, that’s me — I look after a family member or friend.”
  • “I didn’t know there was support for people like me.”
  • “I don’t have to do this on my own.”

By helping spread the word, you’re helping people:

  • make informed choices
  • reduce stress and isolation
  • feel more confident and supported
  • access practical and financial help
  • and take care of their own wellbeing too

You don’t need experience — just kindness and a willingness to help. We’ll provide all the materials and support you need.

So, this Carers Rights Day — and every day — let’s keep raising awareness together, one leaflet and one poster at a time. 💛

Together, we can share information and help make sure carers get the support they need.
