Single page [DEMO]

  1. This page exists to demonstrate how content blocks on the Carers Leeds website work. It is intended as a reference. For help understanding how to insert these blocks, there are multiple sources of information:
  2. Try editing this page in the WordPress admin. By inspecting the blocks on this page it should be easy to understand the names of particular blocks which will help you create them yourself
  3. Watch the training video. This outlines the main blocks used and explains how to insert/configure them
  4. Consult general WordPress training materials. The site uses the default WordPress block editor (a.k.a. Gutenberg) and there are many high quality training resources available for this online, including articles and video content. Try searching YouTube to find relevant information

Using headings to structure your page

Inserting H2 headings will automatically create jumplinks in the “On this page” menu when used on pages. Why not H1? Because a page should only contain one H1 element and this has already been inserted for you automatically as the page title.

To keep the “On this page” menu tidy and clear, we do not insert links for lower level (e.g. H3, H4…) headings, though you are free to use these within the page to break down your content further.

Inserting images

Images be used to illustrate content or add additional information. A number of predefined image crops can be selected. Wide 2:1 crops work well with the design of the site and avoid images disrupting text content too heavily.

Image captions can be used in addition to alt text.

Setting images to the ‘wide’ width gives them more prominence:

The image caption can be toggled on or off in the floating toolbar.

Videos

Pasting a YouTube link into the editor will automatically render an embedded player on the frontend of the site:

Signposting to other pages

While standard text links can be used to point to other pages, the site includes a ‘link signpost’ block that gives these links greater prominence. By default these blocks use the page’s existing title:

However there is the option to override this, which will allow more engaging, contextualised titles to be written:

Signposting to files

Use the File block to insert links to files for visitors to download. By default this will use the file’s name and description as set in the WordPress media library, however you are free to override this in the block settings.

Impact Report 2023 – 2024

The difference we’ve made to carers’ lives in Leeds

Signposting to news

Signposting to news articles is a great way of keeping useful articles visible across the site. There are two modes for post blocks: specific and latest.

The specific mode allows a specific post to be selected and displayed:

9 December 2024

Carers Leeds Impact Report 2023-2024

The latest mode will show the most recent post with a particular category. e.g. on a page about LGBTQ+ carers, you could choose to show the latest post categorised with LGBTQ+. You can choose the maximum age of the post that should be shown – e.g. set ’90’ to only show posts that are less than 90 days old. This prevents out of date articles being shown to visitors:

Signposting to events

As with the post block, you can use the block in specific mode to select a specific event:

26 November 2024   —   10:00 – 12:00

Carer information session – Moving from Children's to Adult Services

Online

Or select the next event mode (and optionally a category) to automatically display the next event in your chosen category. This will keep itself up to date and will show no event if no matching event is found. The block below is showing the next event with a category of ‘Advice’.

Jobs

No opportunities to show you.

No matching events found.

Inserting lists of people

Insert a people list block to display staff or trustee members. You can filter the list by role type (e.g. Trustees) and optionally provide a heading.
