Breaks and grants for carers

Time for carers

We understand how important it is for unpaid carers to take a break and focus on their wellbeing. That’s why, over the years we have proudly provided carers with grants to support much-needed respite. Sadly, due to budget cuts, we no longer have funding for our much-loved Time for Carers grant. However, while this particular scheme is coming to an end for now, we are always searching for alternative available schemes which is why we have collated some current external grants and break opportunities that you may be eligible for.

Carefree

Carefree is an organisation offering low-cost hotel stays across the UK for unpaid carers. These breaks help carers recharge and manage their caring responsibilities more effectively. To apply, simply sign up on the Carefree website and provide details about yourself and the person you care for. You will need to submit proof of your caring status, either by uploading a document or nominating a professional referee. Once approved, you’ll gain access to Carefree’s booking portal, where you can browse and request a hotel stay. Each break costs £33 and includes up to two nights’ accommodation (often with breakfast included!). To sign up, visit their ‘take a break’ page.

Carers Trust

Carers Trust provides grants to help carers access breaks or other forms of support to enhance their wellbeing. We may be able to assist with applications on a case-by-case basis, depending on financial eligibility and personal circumstances, including income and outgoings. If you’d like to discuss this further, please speak directly with your carer support worker or contact our Advice Line on 0113 380 4300.

A Bit of a Break

A Bit of a Break offers self-catering holiday properties to individuals and families of those receiving palliative care, giving them an opportunity to spend quality time together. To access this service, individuals must be referred by a health or social care professional. Properties are available in various locations across the UK. For further details on eligibility and referral professionals, visit their website.

Family Fund

Family Fund provides grants to families on a low income who are raising a disabled or seriously ill child or young person (under 24 years old). To apply, complete an application form and submit supporting documents. Check their eligibility criteria here.

Other discounts and grants for carers

Beyond these grants, you may benefit from the following resources for accessing discounts and additional financial support:

  • Turn2Us: Find grants based on your specific circumstances by completing a simple grant search.
  • Discounts for Carers: Access discount codes for unpaid carers across retail, food chains, travel, and more.
  • Access Card: For just £5, this card helps communicate an adult or child’s accessibility needs, including support from a carer, inability to queue, or limited mobility. It can also often provide free carer entry at various venues.
