What is an unpaid carer?

An unpaid carer is someone who provides help and support to a family member, friend or neighbour who couldn’t manage without their help. This could be due to illness, disability, mental health problems or substance misuse.

What we do

Established in 1996, Carers Leeds is a charity that provides information, advice and support to unpaid adult and parent carers across our city. This includes our Advice  Line, carers support groups, one to one support and support in hospitals. Some of our services are universal – open to all carers – and some are targeted at specific groups of carers. Our services are provided to communities throughout Leeds. We work in partnership with others to deliver our service and to influence them to act to benefit unpaid carers. This involves those working in health and social care and employers.

Brief Role Description:

This is a new role funded by the lottery where you will support Carers Leeds to provide advice and assistance on completion of appropriate Welfare Benefits and
to help carers maximise their income through benefit surgeries and 1-1 support. We are seeking someone who has demonstrable benefit experience with a working knowledge of IT packages such as Microsoft Office and databases and face to face and telephone work. You will be responsible for driving forward our benefit offer and playing an integral role in our advice and information team.

Brief Role Description:

Working in a busy team of carer support workers, initially supporting carers who look after people with a diagnosis of dementia or memory issues.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Delivering independent, impartial, and confidential information, advice and support through a range of means including telephone, email, and face to face at Carers Leeds offices and community-based locations.
  • Working as a member of a team of Carer Support Workers providing accurate, up to date, carer-focussed information, advice, and support that enables and empowers people.
  • Supporting people with understanding their rights and options, problem solving, successfully navigating health and social care systems and where necessary signposting carers to a range of other sources of specialist information and support.
  • Facilitating our monthly Dementia Carers Support Group in Yeadon. This post is subject to a satisfactory a DBS check and the post-holder is required to have access to a car.

Volunteer Digital Inclusion Befriender

REF: VOL001

Are you interested in digital inclusion and want to make a difference by supporting others to use technology?

Our new volunteer digital inclusion befriender role will involve offering one-to-one digital support to digitally excluded carers (in their homes or in the community) who want to build their confidence using technology. This role might include supporting carers to:

  • Access and use equipment and devices to get online.
  • Become confident using technology.
  • Use different apps relevant to their needs and interests (such as games, online shopping, video calling and online banking).
  • Access online support groups and events.

This role will make a difference and empower individuals to feel more independent and confident in their own ability regardless of any perceived barriers they face.
