Supporting carers of people with dementia

Dementia carer support in Leeds Teaching Hospitals

Carers Leeds offers a specific service to carers of people with dementia or memory problems in Leeds acute hospitals. We hae 2 specialist Dementia Carer Support Workers – one based at St James’ and the other at Leeds General Infirmary but they cover all Leeds hospital sites. Much of the work focuses on involving carers in discharge planning and ensuring that carers are informed about services available to them in the community.

Dementia carer support in West Leeds

Carers Leeds is funded by Leeds West Clinical Comissioning Group to provide specialist dementia carer support services working in partnership with the 38 GP practices in this part of the city. Referrals are received directly from practice staff and the majority of carers are then visited at home or seen in the GP practice or a mutually convenient venue.

Training for carers of people with dementia

Carers Leeds provides training to educate and support carers of people with dementia to enable them to better manage their caring role. The courses focus on giving participants an understanding of dementia, how to access support as a carer, financial and legal affairs and planning for the future. The courses are facilitated by two specialist Dementia Carer Support Workers.

Individually tailored training for groups of carers of people with dementia can be made available on request.

Decaff Central – Carers Leeds Dementia Cafe
