Supporting carers of people with mental health issues

Carers Leeds has a dedicated and experienced team of people who will support carers who are caring for a person with mental health problems. We understand that caring for a person with mental health problems can have its own particular difficulties. This could be to do with the stigma around mental health and the sometimes distressing situations that carers have to face. Feelings of guilt and worry for the future can make it hard for carers to know who they can talk to and what they can do. Mental health services may not fully understand the role of the carer, may not share information that the carer feels is important, and the carer can feel isolated and not valued.

The Mental Health Carer Support Workers will help carers identify the support they need and work with the carer to achieve these goals. This can include someone to talk to, helping in getting views across to staff in mental health services, information that will help in the caring role or support to understand the health issues of the cared for person.

Support available from Carers Leeds can help carers to acquire the skills, information, support and contacts needed for greater confidence in caring.

We also run carer support groups for carers of people with mental health issues.
